Harlan D. Manston, age 80, of Barnesville, Minnesota died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo, North Dakota. Harlan Dale Manston was born August 17, 1931in Barnesville, Minnesota the son of Charles and Delia (Peterson) Manston. He was baptized and confirmed in the Downer Presbyterian Church and was a member there until the church closed and moved to Rollag. He married Shirley Stulz on April 9, 1960 at Glyndon Lutheran Church. They established their home on the Manston family farm, which was established in 1923, where they raised small grains, cattle, buffalo, and llamas. Harlan served in the Army from 1954 to 1955. He was stationed in Germany as a truck and Jeep driver. He always said he knew Germany better than Minnesota. In September 2001, he visited Germany again and found many things very different. Harlan served on the Elkton Township Board for 18 years. He also served on the Red River Valley Coop Power Board for 33 years, retiring in 2011. He also served on the Square Butte Board at Grand Forks. He enjoyed coffee with his buddies, dancing, fishing, deer hunting, playing Whist, and teasing his grandkids. Harlan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley of Barnesville, MN; children: Darla (Tony) Woodson of Genoa, IL, Volare Lori (Ken) Kuhn of Cherry Valley, IL, Nick Manston of Barnesville, MN, and Bruce (Andrea) Manston of Sabin, MN; grandchildren: Brian, Brianna, and Amy Kuhn, Marcus and Holly Woodson, Brayden, Rylan, and Jarrett Manston; sister, Marilyn Lass of Moorhead, MN; 3 brothers-in-law; 1 sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Darrell; and sister, Marlys. Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Barnesville, MN Visitation: Will be on Wednesday at the Dobmeier Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Prayer Service and resume one hour prior to services in the church Burial: Elkton Township Cemetery, rural Downer, Minnesota Clergy: Rev. Stephen Olson Music: Shelley Holmstrom, Organist and Rosie Carr, Soloist Memorials may be directed to Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Downer Youth Softball, or Elkton Cemetery Association. The Dobmeier Funeral Home of Barnesville is assisting the family with arrangements.
