Herbert Flaten, 78, rural Hawley, Minnesota died February 21, 2009 at home surrounded by family. Funeral services are Tuesday, Februrary 24, 2009 at 11 am in Gran Lutheran Church with Pastor Jim Greene officiating. Paula Tenderholt will serve as soloist accompanied by organist Pam Aakre. Pallbearers are DarNell Flaten, Wayne Shulstad, Mike Flaten, Jim Keats, Jason Emerson, Erick Swenson, Joey Swenson and Gordon Shulstad. Honorary Pallbearers are the Horseshoe Pitchers. Military Honors are being done by the American Legion Post 153 and VFW Post 4628 both of Barnesville. Interment is at Gran Lutheran Cemetery in Skree Township of Clay County, Minnesota. Herbert was born on December 21, 1930 to Otto and Evelyn (Hanson) Flaten in Barnesville, Minnesota. He attended country school with his three brothers. As a young man he lived and worked on the Nilmar Hanson farm. He then served in the US Army from 1953-1955 stationed in Germany. On September 13, 1956 he married Eunice Gulbranson in Gran Lutheran Church. Herbert farmed, drove beet truck, and worked at the potato warehouse in Downer sorting potatoes. He also worked at American Crystal Sugar for a number of years, where he retired in 1998. Herbert loved pitching horseshoes, fishing, camping, going for drives, and playing with his grandchildren. Herbert is survived by his wife, Eunice Flaten of Hawley, daughter Brenda (David) Emerson of Hawley, son Robert (Tammy) Flaten of Hawley, five grandchildren Jennifer, Bethany (fianc Quinn), Jason Emerson all of St. Paul, Minnesota, Kari Flaten of Grand Forks, Kristi Flaten (fianc Shawn) of Hawley, brother David (Aline) Flaten of Hawley, and sister-in-law Diana Flaten of Hawley. Herbert is preceded in death by his parents Otto and Evelyn (Hanson) Flaten, brothers Orvin Flaten and Ernest (Arlene) Flaten.
