Michael Holm

Mike Holm, 66, of Barnesville, MN died on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, January 20, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Barnesville, MN. Visitation will be held from 2-5 PM, Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville, MN with a Prayer Service at 5:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the memorial service at the church on Monday. Michael James Holm was born on April 4, 1947 in a one room log house near Aitkin, MN to Knute and Ruth (Pratt) Holm. Mike was baptized at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Palisade, MN and confirmed at St. John's Church, Aitkin, MN. He attended school in Aitkin, MN and went on to college at Bemidji State University, MN. Mike was united in marriage to Susan Brooks Fisher on February 22, 1968 at a church near Minnetonka, MN. They lived in Bemidji while Mike finished college. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1969. Mr. Holm was hired later that summer as a high school teacher in Barnesville, MN. They had two days to move before school started, and began their new life in Barnesville in 1969. Mike taught several subjects including, Social Studies, History, Geography, and many students favorite class Social Problems. He also was the Student Council Advisor, Knowledge Bowl Advisor, and coached Junior High and Jaycee wrestling. Mike and Suzy hosted 2 different AFS students. For many years, he was known as "Little Holm" to the students. Later in his teaching career he also helped with ticket sales for home events and was the concession stand manager. Mike retired after 35 years of touching students' lives at Barnesville High School. Mike also enjoyed several other things including photography with his wife Suzy. He was an avid gardener. He spent many off hours working on carpentry and roofing. Mike was always willing to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it. He had a great sense of humor which his students and co-workers benefited from. He also loved his dogs and one of his favorites was the boxer. Mike is survived by his wife Suzy, two children: Jennifer (Gary) Raknerud, Northwood, MN, Patrick Holm, Morris, MN; five grandchildren: Zach, Carter, and Daniel Raknerud, Trey and Sydney Holm; four siblings: Jerry (Cherie) Holm, Aitkin, MN, Charity McNeil, Swatara, MN, Linda Iverson, Bellevue, NE, Patsy Sadness, Columbia Heights, MN, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emily Raknerud; his parents, Knute and Ruth; one brother, Rod Holm; two brothers in law: Larry Iverson and Kenny McNeil. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
