Merlin Melby, 81, died on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family under the care of hospice. Memorial services will be 4:00 PM, Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville, MN with Pastor Patrick Herzog. Visitation will be from 2-4 on Sunday at the funeral home. Merlin John Melby was born on April 21, 1931 to Hilma Josephine (Johnson) and Clarence Melby near Canby, MN. He grew up and attended school in Canby, he continued his education at St. Olaf College graduating in 1955. Merlin had a calling into the ministry and attended Luther Seminary graduating in 1959, the same year he married Marlys Jean Anderson of Dwight, ND. He served four parishes as a Lutheran Minister until 1972, when he moved his family to Little Falls, MN and owned Memory Lane, a successful gift store for 23 years. During his time in Little Falls, he went on extended missionary trips. He visited numerous trips to China, the Phillipines, and Ireland spreading Gods word. He was a faithful volunteer in many organizations donating his time and talents. Upon retirement, Merlin and Marlys retired to the community of Barnesville in 1995. Merlin continued his gardening, volunteerism, and a servant to His Lord. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marlys, Fargo, 3 children: Eric (Jeni) Melby of Buffalo, MN, Melanie (Jeff) Sorenson of Newfolden, MN, Jason (Michelle) Melby, of St. Cloud, MN, 5 grandchildren: Maegan, Dylan, Ethan, Connor, and Grace, and several nieces and nephews, who are left in the Lords earthly care. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Nona Husby and Ardis Kveene.
