H. Virgil Holt

H. Virgil Holt, 85, of Barnesville, MN, died Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Clayco Care Center in Barnesville. Harold Virgil Holt was born November 2, 1926, in Pelican Rapids, MN, to Eddie and Thea (Strandlien) Holt. He grew up on a farm in Norwegian Grove, where he attended and graduated from District 201. He was baptized and confirmed at North Immanuel Lutheran Church. Virgil joined the Navy and served from 1944 to 1946 as a Seaman First Class . He had basic training in Chicago, IL and was stationed in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Upon returning from the Navy he worked for Deseth Road Construction and farmed. He also worked for the Meineke-Johnson Company and was an all-around Jack-of-all-trades . In 1947 Virgil married Arlene Lyden. They farmed in Norwegian Grove for 2 years. They moved to a farm near Barnesville, MN in 1951. There they farmed and worked outside the home until retiring in 1987. In 2009 he moved to the Clayco Care Center and resided there until his death. He was a member of St. James United Church of Christ, the American Legion and the Senior Citizens, all of Barnesville. Virgil enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing cards, gardening and just spending time outdoors. Virgil is survived by his daughter Vickie (Harold) Gaul, Austin, MN; grandsons: Michael Minetor; Sean (Angie) Minetor; Jonathan Gaul; Dustin (Stephanie) Gaul; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Micheal, Cassandra Minetor; Aiden, Cole Minetor; Michael Gaul; Josef Gaul; brother, Wally (Marlys) Holt, Barnesville, MN; sisters: Frances Axness, Pelican Rapids. MN and Geneva Adams, St. Paul, MN; sisters-in-law: Eleanora Holt, Fergus Falls, MN; Mavis Holt, Pelican Rapids, MN and Janet Holt, Barnesville, MN; a brother-in-law, sister-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Virgil is also survived by a special group of friends and family at the Clayco Care Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Arlene; parents, Eddie and Thea; daughter and son-in-law: Connie and Ric Minetor; grandson: Casey Gaul; brothers: Eugene, Lawrence; Curtis and Wayne and sisters: Hazel Borg; Marian Pederson; Irene Jonson. Visitation: Thursday, March 22, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Dobmeier Funeral Home, Barnesville, Minnesota. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
