Alfred Lien, 98, of Barnesville, MN, formerly of Downer, MN died on Saturday, March 02, 2013 at the Golden Manor Assisted Living in Barnesville, MN. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Baker-Downer Westminter Presbyterian Church with Pastor Loralee Benz officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Elkton Cemetery, rural Downer, MN. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM, Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Thursday. Alfred Carlton Lien was born on November 22, 1914 to Christian and Clara (Jensen) Lien in Blanchard, ND. At the age of 8 years old, his family settled in Downer, MN. He attended school in Downer, MN. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Delores Henry on January 29, 1938 in Glyndon, MN. The couple made their home in Downer, MN. Al worked for the rail road for a short time. He worked for Kost Brothers in Downer for many years until he retired in 1975 as a foreman of the concrete block plant. In 2005, they moved into Barnesville. He was an avid gardener. He supplied vegetables to area people for years. He enjoyed fishing. He would build his own fish houses, spears, and other fishing items. Al worked with wood in his shop and built wishing wells, loons, butterflies, bears, and many other things for his family. He was a member of the Downer Rod and Gun Club for a long time. Alfred is survived by six children: Merry Kae Johnson of West Fargo, Alfred Jr. (Jeanette) Lien of Fargo, Sharon (Bill) Johnson of Barnesville, MN, Sandra (Dave) Bulik of Detroit Lakes, MN, Chris (Mary) Lien of Barnesville, and Tim (Cassie) Lien of Barnesville, 12 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren: Jeff (Jo) Johnson of Fargo, Alfred Lien III of Belle Fouche, SD, James (Joanna) Lien of Prior Lake, MN and their children: Stephanie, Chance, Spencer, Jamison, Trace, Parker, Chase, Hunter, and Hapana; Phillip (Nichole) Lien of Oronoco, MN and their children Brenna and Matthew, Tony (Karen) Bulik of Highlands Ranch, CO, and their children: Claire and Olivia; Tricia Rowe of Minneapolis, and her daughter Lauren; DeAnn Lien of Barnesville and her children Walker and Wyatt Erdmann, Heather (Scott) Leinen of Fargo, and their children Levi and Gavin, Jason (Sara) Lien of Barnesville and their children Christian and Jack, Kelli (Ryan) Froslie of Barnesville, and their children Ellis and Natalie; Dayna (Derek Mostue) Hoppe of Barnesville, and her son Cody Mostue and Shelby (Matt Simon) Lien of Barnesville and daughter Brylee; and many nieces and nephews, two sisters in law: Olive Lien, Sabin, MN, and Shirley Henry, Moorhead, MN, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 2009, his parents, seven brothers: Chet, Walt, David, James, Lawrence, Norman, Arnold, two sisters: Evelyn Lenz and Berniece Olesberg.
