Dorothy Swenson

Dorothy Swenson, age 93, a resident of Barnesville, Minnesota died Friday, August 10, 2012 at her home in Barnesville under the care of Hospice and her family. Dorothy was born May 10, 1919 to Harold and Grace (Root) Hoel in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She graduated from high school in Christine, ND. Then Dorothy graduated from Moorhead State University with an elementary and special education degree. She taught several one-room schools and later taught at Campbell-Tintah school. Dorothy married Clarence Swenson on April 12, 1941 in Wolverton, Minnesota. Dorothy and Clarence made their home and farmed in Deerhorn Township of Wilkin County, Minnesota where they raised their family. They retired from farming in 1984. They continued to live on the farm until 1990 when they moved to Barnesville. On October 10, 2008 Clarence died. Dorothy was very proud of being involved with implementing the hot lunch program in which they lobbied for in Washington, D.C. Dorothy enjoyed many activities in her life: sewing, embroidery, quilting, gardening, reading, painting, drawing, working on cross-word puzzles and dancing with Clarence. She was a member of St. James United Church of Christ Church, serving on their ladies aid, and as a Sunday school teacher. Dorothy also enjoyed being involved with homemakers. Dorothy is survived by her two daughters: Judy (Roy) Scott, Fargo, ND, Ellen Oie, Barnesville, two sons: David (Nancy) Swenson, Pigeon, Michigan, Ronnie (Jan) Swenson, Williston, ND; daughter-in-law Terry Lee, Berthoud, Colorado; Grandchildren: David (Shelley) Martin, LeAnn (Jesse) Martin, Paul Oie, Carrie (Dwight) Affield, Shaun (Janet) Swenson, Shane Swenson, Soni (Al) Hartl, Megan Swenson, Ryan (Kyli) Swenson; Great Grandchildren: Nicholas, Kristina, Staci, Blake and Austin Loomis, Jared and Travis Affield, Kaitlyn and Riley Hartl, Caid, Ilia and Aubryn Swenson; great-great-grandchildren: Caidyn Fjekston and Daimien Brown; brother, Kenneth Hoel; sister, Patty Brown; sister-in-law, Lois Hoel. She was preceded in death by her parents: husband, Clarence Swenson; son, Jerald Swenson, infant son, Dennis; sister, Sandra Kautz; brother, Stanley Hoel; brother-in-law, Robert Brown, sister-in-law, Mary Hoel. Pallbearers are Blake Loomis, Shane Swenson, Jared Affield, Wyatt Olson, Nicholas Loomis and Ryan Swenson. Honorary Pallbearers are Shaun Swenson, Travis Affield and Austin Loomis Visitation: Will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the Dobmeier Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Prayer Service and visitation will resume one hour prior to services in the church. Funeral Service: 11:00 am, Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at St. James United Church of Christ in Barnesville, Minnesota. Interment: Mitchell Township Cemetery Presiding: Pastor Wendy Ward
