Roland Holm, 76, died on Monday, May 26, 2014, at the Palliative Care Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barnesville, MN with Pastor Colin Grangaard officiating. Burial will follow in Lysne Church Cemetery, rural Hawley. Visitation will be held from 5-8 PM, Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Dobmeier Funeral Home in Barnesville, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. Roland Olaf Holm was born on April 5, 1938 in Cromwell Township, north of Hawley in his grandparents' home. He was the son Olaf and Gerda "Gertie" Alida (Nelson) Holm. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lysne Church. He started school in Twin Valley, MN and lived with his family on the farm near Syre, MN. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1956. Roland was united in marriage to Nancy Ann Hunter on May 10, 1958 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. They made their home in Moorhead and Roland worked construction for Kvamme Construction for several years. He also worked at Hornbacher's while going to putting himself through college. He graduated in May of 1966 from Moorhead State University. He began teaching the following fall in Barnesville where he taught for 33 years. He taught all of the sciences including Chemistry, Biology, and even math. He coached the Barnesville Wrestling Program for 31 years with his coaching partner Dennis Kragnes. He is ranked as one of the most winning high school wrestling coaches in Minnesota history. During the summers, Roland spent his summers working construction and has built over a dozen homes in the area including the one his family lives in today. In his retirement years, he has served as the building inspector in Barnesville, Glyndon, and Sabin. Roland has always taken a leadership role in keeping Blue Eagle Lake cleaned up. He enjoyed fishing and hunting over the years with his family and friends. He enjoyed watching birds. He is one of many frustrated Minnesota Twins and Viking fans. He enjoyed keeping up and talking about politics. He was always teaching, regardless if he was in the classroom or not. Roland has a great sense of humor in and out of the classroom. Roland is survived by his wife Nancy, four children Julie (Jack) Johnson, Glyndon, MN, Jeff (Eileen) Holm, Minot, Jill (David) Hudson, Gardner, ND , James (Rhonda) Holm, White Plains, NY; 12 grandchildren: Jessica (Jeff) Zenk, New Hope, MN, Heidi (Brad) Bushy, Moorhead, MN, Brittany (Jason) Schapp, Fargo, ND, Kaitlin (Geoff) McCollum, Moorhead, MN, Sarah Holm, Minot, Zachary (Sudha) Holm, Moorhead, Mark Holm, Minot, Ashley Hudson, Savage, MN, Andrew Hemmah, Gardner, ND, Benjamin Hudson, Gardner, Ruby and Gabrielle Holm, White Plains, NY, 7 great grandchildren: Maya, Dylan, and Mason Bushy, Cole and Brigitte Zenk, Brooklyn and Kali McCollum, and brother in law Tom (Jackie) Holvik, St. Michael, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother in law Marilyn and Marvin Thompson.
