Burney Carver

July 22, 1929 — January 15, 2018

Burney Carver, 88, died unexpectedly at his home in Barnesville, MN on Monday, January 15, 2018.  Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 20, 2018 at St. James United Church of Christ with Rev. Frank Picard officiating.  Burial will be 2:00 PM at the Mapleton Cemetery, Mapleton, ND.  Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Dobmeier Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday.  Burney Wayne Carver was born on July 22, 1929 to Roy and Florence May (Prather) Carver in Atlantic, Iowa.  He grew up surrounded by family on a farm in Iowa.  He attended school in Atlantic, Iowa.  Burney served his country in the US Army from October 6, 1952 to September 22, 1954.  He completed basic training in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and was assigned to electrician’s school.  He then was sent to Korea where he and 50 other Americans were advisors at the Korean Army Camp.  Burney, with the help of an interpreter, helped with the rebuilding of a mess hall that had burned down.  Other projects in Korea included a water tower, theater, bridges, and other buildings.  He returned home and farmed in Iowa from 1954 to 1956.  Burney was married to Elsiebel (Long) Brindley from 1957-1971.   He started working for Armour and Company at Vallisca, Iowa in August of 1956.  He moved to Greenfield, IA in November of 1956 until 1962.  Then lived in Sioux Rapids, IA from 1962-1985.  During these years he was buying hogs for Armour Company.  He then lived in St. Paul, NE from 1985-1987, from 1987-1989 he lived in Huron, SD and retired from Armour Company.  He moved to Barnesville in 1989, to manage the Dakota Pork Buying Station; they were bought out by John Morrell Co., he retired from the company when the station was closed.   Burney worked for the Clay County Fair Board from 2007-2016 maintaining the fair grounds.  Burney was married to Jean (Ellison) Lawyer on November 4, 1995 in Mapleton, ND.  Burney has been a member of St. James UCC since 1996.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post and lifetime member of the VFW.    Burney loved horses and western pleasure riding.  He also enjoyed fishing, wood working, and gardening.  Burney is survived by his wife Jean, Barnesville, step children, Sharon Lawyer, Eagan, MN, Launee (Bryan) Hamnes, Bottineau, ND, Roger (Julie) Lawyer, Bismarck, ND, grandsons: Seth Hamnes, Bottineau, ND, Joshua Lawyer,  Grayson Lawyer, and Gabriel Lawyer, Bismarck, ND; son Dr. Dennis (Sherry) Carver, Goldendale, WA, daughter Linda Carver, Texas, niece Carol (Larry) Almonrode-Fetters,  Des Moines, IA, nephews Steven (Denise) Almonrode, Des Moine, IA, and Roger (Susie) Almonrode, Friona, TX.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Jeanette Almonrode.   Burney's Memorial Folder
