Carol Swenson

Carol Swenson, 82, Barnesville, MN, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, at Valley Care and Rehab in Barnesville, MN. A memorial service will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Barnesville, MN at 2:00 pm on Thursday December 12, 2024, with Pastor Ali Haugerud officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Carol, a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, was born on April 2, 1942, in Ada, Oklahoma, to Leonard and Pauline Yoder, Carol was raised on a family farm where she cultivated a deep bond with her extended family and especially with her sisters, the three of whom were very tight-knit. At the age of 16, she moved to Denver, Colorado. It was here that her daughters were born before relocating to Barnesville, Minnesota, where her 3 sons were born.

 She and her husband, Burton Swenson, built a wonderful life together, and were married for over 43 cherished years. The couple shared countless winters in Colorado, creating lasting memories with her two sisters.

Carol was an active member of the Lady Lions and the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion (WMSTR), and Our Saviors Lutheran Church, bringing her spirited personality to every event. Known for her feisty nature and a delightful sense of humor, she brought joy to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Friends and family will fondly remember her famous fried chicken and mashed potatoes, delectable dishes that became the hallmark of family gatherings. 

In addition to her culinary skills, Carol worked as a bartender at the Galaxy and the VFW, where her warmth and kindness drew people in. She cherished playing Bingo, cards, and enjoyed getting together for casino trips, always with a twinkle in her eye and a bit of sass. 

Carol is survived by her devoted husband, Burton Swenson; her children: Sheryl (Spencer) Bernier, Karen (Justin) Batton, David Downing, Paul Downing, and Ryan Downing; grandchildren: Tony (Aaron) Christopherson, Jay Blilie, Kyle (Read) Bernier, Mitchell Bernier, Amber (Aaron) Colby, Karissa (Ryan) Snider, and Mason Downing; Great-grandchildren: Adlie Blilie, Henry Colby, and Lonnie Colby; Sister Tami (Lee) Wells-Schenkeir; Sisters-in-law: Bonnie Swenson, Joan Swenson, and Patty Swenson, along with her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Sandra Brownell.
