Curtis Lloyd Butenhoff

January 17, 1935 — July 12, 2024

Barnesville

Curtis Lloyd Butenhoff passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo ND.

He was born on January 17, 1935, to Edwin and Violet (Jackson) Butenhoff on the family farm in rural Baker, MN. He grew up there and attended a country school near Baker, then attended and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1953. While in high school he played football and ran in track.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Beverly Hanson on October 30, 1954, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Barnesville. This year they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Curt was drafted into the Army and served in the Big Red One. After his military service in Fort Riley, KS and Fort Sill, OK they returned to Barnesville and lived in an old home along Highway 52. He returned to the business of family farming with his brothers. They later built a large orange potato warehouse along Highway 52 near Baker.

He and Bev built a home along the Comstock Road where they continued to farm, and there the family grew. In 1973 he changed the farm operation from potatoes to sugar beets. Curt retired from farming in the mid 1980’s. He was a true farmer all of his life and last year he was recognized as a 50-year shareowner with Minn-Dak.

In 2020 Curt and Bev moved off the farm and were presently living in Moorhead, MN

During his retirement years he loved traveling to Montana, Kansas and Utah to visit his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed watching old Westerns on TV, listening to country music and driving around looking at the crops and checking rain gauges. He treasured his time with Bev, family and friends.

He was a member of the Barnesville Jaycees and a faithful member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Barnesville. He will always be remembered as a quiet, gentle man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart.

Curt is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bev Butenhoff, Moorhead, MN, four children: Susan (Mike) Kallestad, Kelly Butenhoff, Keith (Rhonda) Butenhoff, Lee Butenhoff, two grandchildren: Britta (Nick) Kasser and Ryan Butenhoff, brothers Ed (Clarene) Butenhoff, Ron (Hazel) Butenhoff, and several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Curt was preceded in death by parents, two sisters Fern Hansen, Janet Brown, and grandson Aaron Butenhoff.
